Selecting the Right Resume Format for You:

Different Resume Types

Picking the right type of resume is a bit like choosing the best method to tell the story of your work experiences. There are different formats, each serving specific purposes. For instance, if you want to emphasize your work history, a chronological resume might be the way to go. On the other hand, if you want to highlight your skills, a functional resume could be more suitable. It's important to select the format that shows what you want to convey about your professional background.

01

Chronological Resume

A chronological resume is a type of resume that lists your work history in order, starting with your most recent job. This is the most common type of resume because it’s easy for employers to see what jobs you have held and when you worked at them. If you have a strong work history, this type of resume is a good choice for you.

02

Functional Resume

A functional resume is a type of resume that shows your skills more than your work history. It is good for people who want to change their career or have gaps in their work history. You can use this resume when you want a new job that is different from your past jobs, or you have some time when you did not work. A functional resume may not work as well with applicant tracking systems (ATS) compared to a chronological format. However, it can be useful when applying directly to recruiters or managers, especially if you're changing careers.

Combination Resume

A combination resume blends features from chronological and functional formats, giving you the freedom to choose which sections to include and how to use them. It typically consists of a detailed work history section (with dates and descriptions) and a skills-highlighting section.

This format allows you to showcase your career path conventionally while putting a spotlight on your skills. It is useful when it is important to show skill development, such as when changing careers or aiming for career advancement. Keep in mind that while effective, this format may result in a longer resume.
